What are our basics made of?

At Quality Textiles, you can find a wide range of different fabrics. However, the names of fabrics often indicate the way in which they are knitted or woven. For example, strong fabrics like denim derive their strength from being woven in a twill pattern, while corduroy is recognisable by its ribbed structure. The exact material of the fabric is often less important. For example, it doesn't matter whether corduroy is made of cotton or polyester. As long as the distinctive ribbed texture is present, we can call it corduroy.

A large part of our range is made of cotton, polyester, linen, or a combination of these materials. These fabrics have proven to be excellent over the years for making clothes. Historically, cotton and linen have been two of the most popular clothing fabrics, along with silk. However, silk is very expensive and difficult to produce, so people are increasingly opting for satin, which looks similar but is much more affordable. Polyester and other synthetic fabrics are more recent inventions. For certain applications, synthetic fabrics can be a better choice than natural fabrics such as linen and cotton.

Some of our fabrics are made of a combination of cotton or polyester fibers and elastic fibers. This makes the fabrics stretchier and more comfortable to wear. Elastane, Spandex, and Lycra are particularly suitable materials for this purpose. Even natural fabrics can be made more comfortable by adding these elastic fibers. Stretchy fabrics also tend to crease less than fabrics without stretch, which means you can create clothing that retains its shape even after repeated wear.

What are the different uses for our basics?

Our basics are so popular for a reason. They are ideal for making clothes that people love to wear. However, which clothes people like to wear depends on several factors. The appearance of the fabric plays a role, for example. Trendy colors that are popular now may not be as popular next season. The function of the clothing is even more important. In winter, sweatshirt fabric, jogging fabric and fleece are more popular than lighter fabrics such as linen and muslin, which are better suited to summer clothing. Quality Textiles has the best fabrics for every season.

A large part of our range consists of children's fabrics. For children's clothing, the appearance of the fabric and the fact that the material must be warm enough are equally important, but it is at least as important that the fabrics last a long time. A child's pants or jacket should not develop holes if the child falls on their knees or elbows while playing outside. Denim and corduroy are popular for children's pants and jackets due to their durability. But we also have fabrics such as jersey and French terry, which are comfortable to move in. In addition to children's fabrics in beautiful colors, we also have a wide range of printed fabrics for children.

If you want to use our basics for clothing to be worn during physical activity, pay attention to the composition of the fabrics. Cotton fabrics are usually suitable because cotton can absorb a lot of moisture and has breathable properties. The same goes for bamboo fabric, which can absorb even more moisture and feels softer to many. Jersey fabric, jogging, and French terry, for example, are excellent for sportswear.

Working With Fabrics From Our Standard Collection

All our basics are suitable for making clothes. However, some fabrics are easier to sew than others. On the information pages of our fabrics, we provide you with as much useful information as possible about, for example, the needles, stitches, and accessories that you can best use to work with the materials. If there is something to watch out for when cutting out pattern pieces we will inform you. If you use fabrics with edges that can fray, you can come to us for a wide range of high-quality haberdashery items.

Natural fabrics can shrink slightly when washed for the first time. We, therefore, always recommend washing cotton and linen fabrics before cutting out parts or sewing them. Cotton and linen can normally be machine washed without any problems. However, synthetic fibers need to be treated with more care. Some polyester fabrics can be washed at 30 degrees. Synthetic fibers, in general, do not tolerate high temperatures well. Therefore, keep them out of the dryer; you should air dry them for the best result. Ironing is not recommended for most synthetic fabrics.
