What does the GOTS Organic certification mean?

In fact, the GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification comprises two different categories. Fabrics that receive the label "made with organic" consist of at least 70 percent of fibers that are produced organically. GOTS Organic is an even stricter label. All GOTS Organic fabrics in our range are made of at least 95 percent of organically produced fibers. All GOTS certifications are known for their excellent control. The organization controls the entire chain, starting with the cultivation of the cotton plants and ending with the sewing studio that turns the fabrics into clothing. All GOTS Organic cotton in our collection is therefore produced in an environmentally responsible manner and is an environmentally conscious choice.

GOTS controls the entire process that the fabrics go through. The organization therefore also checks processes such as the distribution and labeling of the fabrics. The packaging of a GOTS Organic product is also subject to strict requirements. Furthermore, companies are required to develop a sustainability plan for water and energy usage, and energy management, before they can apply for a GOTS certification. In addition, clothing and fabrics with a GOTS Organic certification may not contain carcinogenic or otherwise harmful materials. These must also not be used during production. Choosing GOTS Organic cotton is therefore a choice that benefits the environment and the wearer of the clothing.

Furthermore, GOTS pays attention to working conditions in the production of fabrics and clothing. The organization guarantees that fabrics carrying their label have been produced in a safe, hygienic workplace where there is no forced labor, child labor, or discrimination. The salaries and working hours meet at least the minimum legal requirements. Please note that GOTS only checks during the processing phase of production. The organization does not conduct inspections during the cultivation of the cotton. The packaging of GOTS Organic cotton is made of recycled paper and cardboard.

Washing and caring for GOTS cotton

If you have GOTS Organic cotton in your home, you naturally want to enjoy the softness and good looks of the fabric for as long as possible. Fortunately, washing and caring for organic cotton is not much more difficult than with regular cotton. We recommend using a mild detergent when washing GOTS Organic cotton, especially if you choose organic cotton to benefit sensitive skin. If you wash GOTS Organic cotton with a detergent that contains harsh chemicals, there is a chance that the skin may develop an allergic reaction. A mild detergent is better suited to the hypoallergenic properties of the fabric.

Organic cotton can be washed at the same temperature as non-organic cotton, at a maximum of 60 degrees. However, we recommend washing at a lower temperature for those who choose GOTS cotton from an environmental perspective. For the first few washes, it is advisable to keep white and colored laundry separate. Because organic cotton is not treated, colored fabrics may release dye during the first few washes. After washing, you can air dry organic cotton, but the fabric can also be put in the dryer, even if it is a knitted fabric made of GOTS cotton.
