Jogging

Jogging or sweat fabric is a knitted fabric that resembles jersey and French terry, but is thicker and heavier. As a result, jogging fabric is suitable for warmer clothing, such as sweaters and cardigans, but also for sportswear. Jogging fabric retains body heat well. The inner surface of jogging fabric is brushed, making the material soft to the skin. Jogging fabric is breathable and slightly stretchy. Although jogging fabric is heavier than other knitted fabrics, clothing made of this material is supple and comfortable.

A warm fabric for sportswear and more

Sportswear is often the first thing people think of when it comes to jogging fabric. This is not surprising, as the fabric has traditionally been used for jogging pants and outfits. The fabric is particularly suitable for outdoor sports. Because the material is thicker than jersey or French terry, it keeps the wearer warm. Due to the brushed inner surface, jogging fabric feels soft on the body, which  of course is important when the clothing rubs against the skin. Furthermore, jogging fabric can absorb moisture well. This keeps the skin dry and therefore warm for those who practice sports outside in cold weather.

However, jogging fabric is more than just a fabric to wear during exercise. The fabric is knitted in multiple layers and thicker yarns are used than in other tricot fabrics. This makes jogging a relatively thick fabric that is ideal for warm winter clothing. For hoodies, cardigans, and pajama pants, jogging is the perfect fabric, for example. But nowadays, the fabric is not only used to make clothing that is primarily comfortable. We are increasingly seeing trendy clothing pop up where jogging fabric is an important component. For example, you can make attractive blazers from the fabric.

Traditionally, jogging fabric is made of 100% cotton. However, it is now common for jogging to consist of a combination of natural cotton fibres and synthetic fibres, such as polyester. This will ensure that clothing made from the fabric retains its shape better. Some people still think that jogging clothing will quickly begin to sag, but this is unlikely to happen due to how jogging is made today. Jogging is slightly stiffer than thinner tricot fabrics, but because it is a knitted fabric, it stretches enough to move freely in.

Jogging provides comfort and warmth

Jogging is also known as winter sweat fabric. This distinguishes it from other knitted fabrics such as jersey and French terry, which are called summer sweat fabric. The fabrics are therefore suitable for clothing with a similar function, but for different seasons. Actually, the name of the material already indicates that it was originally intended to wear during activities which cause the wearer to sweat. Cotton can absorb perspiration well, but it also breathes. This ensures that someone who wears jogging clothing does not overheat or become cold quickly. The brushed surface also feels softer and warmer than the loops of French terry.

Although jogging is still often found in sportswear, the fabric has acquired more functions over the years. This is mainly due to the comfort that the sweat fabric offers. Although the fabric is somewhat thicker and therefore heavier than other tricot fabrics, clothing made of jogging fabric will never be so heavy that the weight makes the wearer uncomfortable. Moreover, it is also a great advantage at home that the fabric feels soft and retains body heat well. All these properties make jogging a perfect children's fabric for the winter months. That's why our children's fabric range features jogging with beautiful colours and prints.

Making and washing clothing with sweat fabric

Jogging fabric is relatively easy to work with. It stretches less readily than most other knit fabrics, making it easier to cut and sew. Because of its heavier weight, it also remains more stable. However, keep in mind that sweat fabric is still a material with some stretch. An underlayer that doesn't move, such as a slip mat, provides some extra security. Jogging can be stitched with a universal needle, but a stretch needle, such as a jersey needle, is recommended. Use a stretch stitch or a zigzag stitch to prevent the thread from breaking when stretching the fabric.

Because sweat fabric consists largely or even entirely of natural fibers, the fabric can shrink in the wash. It is therefore a good idea to wash jogging before making it into clothes. Machine washing can be done both before and after clothing has been made. A normal program at 30 or 40 degrees will not cause any problems. A good fabric softener will keep the inside nice and soft. Jogging fabric should not be put in the dryer, as this can affect the fit. So let it air dry. Ironing is usually not necessary, but possible, as long as the temperature is no more than 110 degrees.

It is normal for the brushed surface of jogging fabric to pill more than other jersey fabrics. If this happens during cutting or sewing, there is no reason to worry. Jogging fabric is often combined with ribbed cuffs at the wrists and ankles of a garment to prevent winter cold from penetrating the clothing.
