Scuba is a stretchy fabric that does not crease. The inside of the cloth feels soft like jersey, while the outside resembles neoprene, the material used to make diving suits. However, scuba is made of polyester, elastane and, sometimes, viscose. Because scuba is so elastic, it always regains its shape. The soft inside feels comfortable on the skin. Scuba is often used for sportswear, but it is also an excellent material for tops and dresses.
When you hear the term "scuba", you probably think of diving. "Scuba diving" is a form of diving, and the fabric strongly resembles the suits made for it. However, scuba is more than just a practical material. You can also make fashionable clothing from it. It is particularly suitable for dresses, skirts, pants, and bodysuits. Because the material is very elastic, it stretches easily during activity. Moreover, the fabric feels comfortable on the skin and is long lasting. Additionally, scuba is relatively easy to work with.
Scuba is essentially a knit, similar to jersey, French terry, and sweat fabric. This means that the material is knitted rather than woven. Knitted fabrics have better stretch than woven fabrics. Furthermore, scuba contains Spandex fibers, which naturally stretch and improve the comfort and crease resistance of the material. Although neoprene feels similar to scuba, the latter is distinguishable from diving suit material by virtue of its composition. All scuba in our collection consists of a mixture of polyester and Spandex. As a result, it is not completely waterproof, but it is warm and comfortable.
Since scuba does not have a right or wrong side, it is a double-faced fabric. Like interlock jersey, for example, the material is knitted so that both sides look the same. It does not matter which side of the fabric you wear on the outside. This makes scuba a relatively easy textile to work with. Another important reason for this is that scuba does not fray. For clothing made of this fabric, you only need to finish the edges if you think it looks neater.
It is no coincidence that scuba resembles neoprene, as the fabric is specially designed to mimic the advantageous properties of neoprene in a material that is more suitable as clothing. There are several ways to make scuba, but very fine fibers are always used. Scuba does not breathe, but when making summer clothing from it, such as a skirt or dress, you have a form-fitting garment that beautifully accentuates your figure. Furthermore, it hardly creases at all. Clothing made of the material retains its shape and will remain beautiful for a long time.
We have discussed summer clothing, but we offer scuba in various thicknesses. For example, there are thicker scuba fabrics that you can wear on a cooler day. They are helpful in this regard because they retain body heat excellently. Or are you looking for something thinner? Then check out our scuba crepe. This fabric is a little lighter and thinner. Moreover, it has a texture that somewhat resembles crepe or chiffon. Like the thicker varieties, this fabric is strong and stretchy. Therefore, you can make clothing from it without any worries.
Ultimately, scuba is most suitable for making clothing. There are other applications for the fabric, such as medical gloves, but it is used primarily to create comfortable, trendy clothing. Therefore, you will find scuba in many different colors in the Quality Textiles webshop; from neutral, dark colors that go well with everything to bright, summery colors that are perfect for warmer days. If scuba is the right material for the clothing you want to make, you'll find the perfect fabric to work with in our store.
As mentioned, scuba is a relatively easy fabric to work with because it doesn't fray. However, there are some things to bear in mind. Due to the fabric's stretchiness and smooth surface, it can slide quite easily. We therefore always recommend placing an anti-slip mat or a rough piece of linen or cotton under the scuba before cutting out the pattern pieces. Furthermore, it is advisable to guide the fabric slowly and carefully through the sewing machine. If you need to unpick thread, holes or lumps may appear in the material.
Cutting out pattern pieces, on the other hand, is very easy with sharp tools. You can best secure the pieces with fabric clips to avoid making holes in the material. Use a jersey or stretch needle with a thickness of between 70 and 90, depending on the thickness of the cloth. As with all stretch fabrics, it is best to sew with a zigzag stitch so that the thread can stretch along with the fabric and not snap. Keep the presser foot pressure as low as possible. You can machine wash scuba material on a delicate cycle at a maximum temperature of 30 degrees. High temperatures can damage the material, so it is best to avoid using the tumble dryer and the iron.
If you're looking for a sturdy, stretchy fabric that moves freely and feels comfortable on the skin, then scuba is an excellent choice. We offer the cloth in various colors and thicknesses in our extensive online range. You can easily buy these and many other high-quality stretch textiles from the Quality Textiles webshop. But even if you're looking for fabrics without stretch, you've come to the right place!
